Speak to Power
By no means is contacting elected representatives the only, or even the most effective means of speaking out, but it is still vitally important to contact government officials about issues of concern to let them know large numbers of people are interested…and watching.
Make a phone call:
Ask to speak with the aide handling the issue of your concern. Identify yourself and ask to leave a message (Please tell Senator/Representative____ that I oppose/support [S___/HR___). Keep it short. You may state reasons, ask for the legislator’s opinion, say no reply is necessary, and/or request a written reply.
Send an email:
Include your postal address to show you are a constituent. Deal with only one issue, keep the message short and concise. Emailed attachments won’t be opened. Many organizations now offer on-line petitions and some of these seem to be quite effective.
Write a letter:
Since the anthrax attack in 2001, postal letters to congress undergo extensive screening and may be delayed up to several weeks. Postcards may not receive the same screening. Written communication to local offices may receive more notice. Letters in general may be best used for longer messages or those that are not time-sensitive.
